Marina Abramovic at MoMa.
Here’s another shot from New York in April. I headed over to the MoMa to check out the Tim Burton exhibit, and discovered this performance artist I’d never heard about: Marina Abramovic. From what I gather she’s basically a loopy Serb who enjoys running into walls for hours. Overall her work is just the right side of disturbing, and forces the audience to contemplate the limitations of the human body and our reactions to them.
She sat on that chair for three months for the entirety of the museums opening hours. Visitors were encouraged to sit across form her in silence. I was told I couldn’t because I wanted to sit in front of her with a newspaper eating a sandwich. Not sure how that contravened the rules on the “sitting in silence”, but whatever.
